Hi guys, was just wondering if maybe you could try your hardest to type words properly because I (and some other forum users) find Text talk highly irritating.
Thanks a lot, much appreciated! Edited by Jeff Ronseal - 02 August 2007 at 16:54 |

I guess I could put up with lol. Shall I tell you the story of why I hate it/why I stopped using text talk? From the ages of about 13-16 I used text talk EVERYWHERE, in emails, in texts (obviously), in forums-EVERWHERE! One day though, it got so common in my spelling that I actually said the letters "L-O-L" out loud and I was so shocked at myself that immediately, from that day on I refused to type anything abbreviated or shortened or in text talk! I now have to spell everything out properly, with the correct punctuation and correct use of capital letters because I fear that if I don't, I could forget how to actually spell words...(I'm kind of obsessive about it now actually-it's gone to the other extreme! Haha! ) |

I too find it extremely annoying. I have brought this up many times as have some other members. It is annoying because if you have never used txt talk it is an impossible language to try and understand.
The whole txt talk genre originated when you were charged by the letter to send messages via a mobile phone. IMHO it has no place on a forum. Things like LOL, ROFL etc are common forum language and not strictly txt talk. As you say Adele, it does intefere with every7day language and completely destroys any chance of kids being able to spell correctly, talk correctly and properly interact with the world around them. There was a thing the other week on the news where they were talking about schooling in general and they asked 10 kids how they spel 'mystique' and all of them got it wrong. The spelt it mis-teeq as in the talentless singer/group. Surely this culture of txt talk and Americanisation of words such as mom which in English is Mum. No wonder the kids are leaving school iliterate! Sorry, but I am not an educated person, failed miserably at school was kicked out of college because I was accused of welding un-supervised despite my supervisor had left the room while I was under the car leading to me severely burning myself with the welding torch flame. Despite all this I do still know the proper use of the English language, punctuation and grammar. So, it is not a difficult thing to do. ![]() |

I'm with you both on this. I detest text talk and with predictive text on a mobile phone now, it is time for it to die a death. I've a mate who still uses it and I can't understand half of what he says. I agree with you Adele, I like to see correct punctuation. I'm slightly obsessed by it too and I can't give a reason for it other than my English teacher must have done a good job!

Must admit, I know we we can do it, but I have a problem with editing peoples posts unless it is really bad. Thankfully over the past few weeks there has been non that I have seen so maybe it has already been removed/edited.

I can see your point, but sometimes zero tolerance is key.
I know people are going to hate me for that, but that's the way it is. |

Yeah. I wouldn't completely delete the post but I don't see any problem with editing the post...To be honest, like I said, I am a tad obsessive about it so I may HAVE to do it for my own peace of mind haha! I'm pretty sure that the person wouldn't even notice if we edit a post, and even if they do, well it's not like we are changing what they said-just correcting it... Thanks man! My first message was a bit more "DONT DO THIS" than "PLEASE CAN YOU TRY NOT TO DO THIS?" and Joff thought that it could cause problems amongst some of the eh hem...less mature forumites, so I tried to make it as polite as possible so that I wouldn't get burnt at the stake!

If a person is using 'text talk' why not just pm them, referring them to the FAQ and rules section and number 13 on the list. This way they will learn to refrain from its use and read all the rules of the forum.

Could do, but to be honest it depends on the amount of people. It's so much quicker to just edit their post.
I guess we could edit the post and then pm them with the reason and link them to the FAQ page?? |

Only if there was a way to highlight it more. Well there is, and that's to make a new section like TT chat, put it at top of the list and put the rules and FAQ topic in it.
However, I have been gifted with the ability to (most of the time) work out the abbreviations. Although I would never have guessed "lol." Who says laugh out loud anyway. I hate text talk to. |
