Top Trumps Tournament
Sir Steve Redgrave crowned Britain’s newest Top Trumps champion on Saturday at the 2012 Top Trumps Tournament Final.
Lloyd Horne, 10, from Warrington, vanquished more than 100,000 schoolchildren from across the UK at the weekend to emerge triumphant at the Grand Final of the National Top Trumps Schools Tournament staged in London. The Grand Final took place at John Lewis in Stratford in the Stadium Suite which overlooks the Olympic Park
The Warrington schoolboy – who attends the same school Top Trumps fan and DJ Chris Evans went to – was handed the trophy by Sir Steve, who was the official ambassador for the 2012 Top Trumps Schools Tournament.
The Grand Final was played using a special London 2012 commemorative edition of Top Trumps Tournament, which features London 2012 medal hopefuls. Lloyd made his splash playing a Michael Phelps card. “It proved the ace in the pack” he beamed afterwards.
As well as the trophy and a host of games goodies, Lloyd now gets to row with Sir Steve on the River Thames later in the summer as part of a ‘money can’t buy’ sporting experience.
Sir Steve said: “Lloyd did fantastically to beat more than 100,000 schoolchildren. He is a very worthy champion and I now better get lots of practise in before we race on the River Thames!”
Lloyd added: “I’m thrilled to bits. I can’t wait to row with Sir Steve Redgrave. He is a legend. I didn’t even think I would get to the Grand Final. I had one last practise on the train coming down with my mum and dad – I beat them both!”
It’s the third year in a row a boy has won – and the third year on the bounce that the winning trophy has headed ‘north’ from London, venue for all three finals.
His mum Michelle says: “We are extremely proud of Lloyd – and are all ecstatic.”
A HUGE congratulations to all the other 12 finalists who took part. It was a great day!
